International Sounds in a Unique Setting

This was a great wedding, featuring a fantastic couple, diverse crowd and beautiful rustic backdrop. The wedding took place in a historic building called Prallsville Mills in Stockton, NJ, right across the bridge from New Hope, PA. The ceremony and dinner were upstairs and the party and dancing — where the DJ system was set up — was downstairs. The wedding guests didn’t wait for dinner to be over before they starting trickling downstairs for the party.

Wedding Music

The bride and groom requested a set list that crossed eras and genres and included The O’Jays, The Specials, Desmond Dekker, Weezer, Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand, Cake, The Roots, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic 5, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Sam Cooke, Al Green, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Etta James, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, Prince Buster and Toots and the Maytals. The final song of the evening, closing out the night, was Another One Bites Dust, and Friends Will Be Friends by Queen, live at Wembley Stadium, July 1986.

The crowd responded well to all the musical choices and spent the night on the dancefloor. One of the highlight for me, was when the grandmother, dressed in Kente cloth, came over and asked me if I had any African music. I put on Expensive Shit by Fela Kuti, a classic Afrobeat song over 13 minutes long. It was a pleasure to see the grandmother dancing with her 4 year old granddaughter to this song. Knowing I had time until the transition to the next song, I took the liberty of getting out from behind my system to join everyone on the dance floor.
