Funky tunes for an international audience
For the past few years, I’ve had an annual guest appearance on a radio show called the Groove Box. It’s broadcast from a independent college station in Tel Aviv and is hosted by a talented, knowledgeable, worldly and effervescent DJ named Daniel Kisluk. I listen to his show through the magic of streaming media grooving to his sets every Tuesday at noon.
Throughout the year, whenever I hear something incredibly groovy, funky or soulful, I deposit into a Groove Box of my own, which I bring with me to the studio for our show.
What’s in the Groove Box this time?
In 2013 I brought breakbeats, soul, old-school hip-hop, classic funk and some Afro-beat. Artists include Hannah Williams, Charles Bradley, Grand Puba, Souls of Mischief, Fred Wesley, the Shaolin Afronauts and more.

What’s with the title?
The odd title, Avocado Foot, is dedicated to my baby daughter who likes to put her tiny foot up on the table and mash food into it.
Before the first oil crisis in the 1976, when gas was cheap, Detroit manufactured cars made of steel with powerful gas-guzzling engines. Turning the key to start the ignition was exciting, because the car would roar to life with a healthy motor sound. Seat belts were optional and there might have been beer involved.
Conditions on today’s roads are a lot safer. Seat belts are mandatory, and drunk driving is illegal, strictly enforced, and socially unacceptable. Our cars are made of lighter materials and our engines are much more fuel efficient, even though they sound more like sewing machines than classic cars.
T-Top Cruising Jams is an homage to the muscular cars of the 70s, and the deep tracks blaring from their primitive mobile hi-fi systems.

Music to listen to while thinking about New York on 9/11.
This mix is based on one that I made while living in New York in 2001. The picture below shows a view of Brooklyn and Queens from Windows on the World, the restaurant that was on the top floor of the World Trade Center.
Features music by Billy Joel, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Kiss, and Aimee Mann.
